Shannon van Staden shares a variety of yoga styles weaving in guided meditation,
to lead you on an authentic and personal journey of hatha and yin yoga in Brussels and on holiday retreat.
Gentle flow is based on held hatha yoga postures which flow in transition from one asana to another. We synchronise the breath with the movement thus approaching the synchronicity of body and mind, or mind and the universe. We practice the traditional asana sequences of surya namaskara (sun salutations). It is more yang in style and a warming yoga which works with muscles, stability and strength. The rhythm and movement is a dance, expressing energy and connection, stillness and movement. Gentle flow compliments yin yoga and is an extraordinary way to connect with your body. Hatha yoga includes the practice of asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), which help bring peace to the mind and body, preparing the body for deeper spiritual practices such as meditation. We work on functional body alignment in the basic yoga postures, breath awareness and breath control. Hatha yoga focuses on strengthening the muscles, increasing stability and balance through held postures synchronised with the breath. The Sanskrit word “hatha” is the yoga of activity, “sun” (ha) and the yoga of balance, “moon” (tha). Hatha yoga is heat inducing and more a yang type of yoga and complimentary to yin yoga for holistic wellbeing. For classes with hatha yoga in Brussels, please check our calendar. Yin yoga is a practice of stillness with long-held postures of up to four minutes, followed by a rebound posture. The postures are mostly lying down or seated, focusing on the spine, hips and knees. Yin yoga focuses on strengthening the joints, ligaments, fascia and bones, as well as deep relaxation of the nervous system. The combination of compression and rebound enables the joints, ligaments and fascia to lengthen and to remain moist, thereby keeping us mobile and supple as we grow older. Yin is a cooling yoga and a meditative practice for the mind. It’s stillness allows our nervous system to calm down. Yin compliments the yang styles of hatha and gentle flow. Yin classes end with a long and deeply relaxing savasana, accompanied by alchemy crystal bowl sound healing. For classes with yin yoga in Brussels, please check our calendar. Watch this interview of Shannon with Bruzz! Shannon talks about her philosophy that yoga is not about being flexible or perfect. Age and stiffness do not matter in the practice of yoga. It is a personal journey so you can connect with mind and body as they are right now. The benefits of flexibility, increased strength and balance, and weight loss are just a bonus!
